In “Step by Step,” Finnish photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of mothers and daughters attending the Connell-Brown Dancing School in North Shields, England. Over seven years in the 1980s, Konttinen documented their aspirations and realities through photographs and conversations. This work not only highlights the personal journeys of these women but also reflects the resilience and spirit of a working-class community. Notably, the book’s cover image of a young dancer inspired the award-winning film “Billy Elliot,” with the film’s writer, Lee H.all, using “Step by Step” as a visual reference during production
