Cover to Cover
Michael Snow

Michael Snow’s Cover to Cover (1975) is a seminal work in the history of conceptual art and the photobook. Comprising 360 pages of black-and-white photographs, the book presents a continuous visual sequence in which each spread offers two opposing views—front and back—of the same subject or scene. This formal device creates a cinematic rhythm, transforming the act of page-turning into a temporal experience akin to film.

Snow disrupts conventional narrative and linear spatial logic, inviting the reader to engage in an active process of interpretation. The work interrogates the mechanics of visual perception, the materiality of the book, and the boundaries between still and moving image. Cover to Cover stands as a critical exploration of photographic representation and a landmark in the evolution of artist’s books.
