Franz West: We’ll Not Carry Coals

£45.00 Add to Cart

What began in the early 1970s with Franz West’s hand-sized Adaptives, small sculptural objects made to be held, carried and positioned against the body, developed into a fertile environment of sculptures, collages, furniture, walk-in rooms and spaces for sitting.

Throughout his practice, West questioned the boundary between art and everyday life, inviting the viewer to touch, use, occupy and interact with his work. Humour, the body and social interaction became central to his playful and irreverent approach: sculpture could become furniture, furniture could become sculpture, and the viewer could become part of the work itself.

Published in conjunction with West’s retrospective at Kunsthaus Bregenz, We’ll Not Carry Coals is organised across five chapters, corresponding to the building’s five floors. From Haini, sixty squeaky blue-green plastic armchairs modelled on a carved-out tree stump, to Corona, the monumental outdoor sculpture, the publication offers a serene presentation of West’s witty and unconventional practice.

Published in close cooperation with the Franz West Atelier, the book also includes 50 previously unpublished collages from the artist’s personal collection.
