Edward Kienholz: 11 + 11 Tableaux is a exhibition catalogue published in 1970 by Moderna Museet in Stockholm to accompany Kienholz’s solo exhibition held from January 17 to March 1 of that year. Edited by K.G. Pontus Hultén and Katja Waldén, the catalogue showcases twelve of Kienholz’s assemblage installations, known as tableaux. Each tableau is presented with a fold-out section containing detailed descriptions and multiple black-and-white photographs.
Kienholz’s tableaux delve into specific, often provocative American settings—such as a Nevada brothel or a Los Angeles bar— more broadly they address themes like memory, mortality, and the subconscious.
The catalogue itself is notable for its unconventional design, featuring a stab-stapled binding with a cloth-covered spine and chipboard back cover. It includes parallel texts in Swedish and English, along with a biography of the artist.
